Tired of Eyeglasses or Contact Lenses?
Would you like to do sports, enjoy your hobbies, do what you do for a living or simply see better without being dependent on eyeglasses or contact lenses? It is a known fact that eyeglasses, particularly with higher prescription, narrow your field of vision, while a long-lasting use of contact lenses may cause irritation, allergies and even inflammation and disability to adjust to a contact lens with some people.
The best solution for you is laser vision correction.
___________________________________________________________________________ Most commonly used laser vision correction methods round the world are LASIK and PRK. LASEK, EPILASIK and other techniques are less commonly used in everyday practice. ___________________________________________________________________________
Am I a good candidate for laser vision correction? Shortsightedness up to -10,0 D Farsightedness to +5,0 D Astigmatism to 4,0 Dcyl can be successfully corrected using the mentioned laser vision correction methods. Prior to the surgery a detailed ophthalmological check-up is needed in order to establish possible existence of counter indications. It is necessary to emphasize that persons over 40 years of age will have a good far vision after the laser vision correction but will need to use reading glasses just like all their contemporaries. LASIK is a laser vision correction method during which a corneal flap is created, then lifted and finally repositioned following the laser vision correction. The corneal flap heals by itself. This method is applicable to all previously mentioned prescriptions. PRK is a method applied mostly for lower prescriptions and thinner corneas. During the surgery the epithelium from the corneal surface is peeled off and the prescription is straightforwardly removed by laser without cutting into the cornea. Epithelium postoperatively heals spontaneously. ______________________________________________________________________
Who is a good candidate?Absolute counter indication is a disease called Keratoconus. This is the condition where cornea is thin and misshaped and further thinning of cornea during the laser intervention would lead to possible complications.
Check-up prior to surgery consists of visual acuity check with and without computer assistance, precise intraocular pressure measurement, biomicroscope check of the anterior and posterior eye segment, computerized korneotopography (graphic view of corneal outer and inner surface), pachymetry (ultrasonic corneal thickness measurement), automatic computer refractometry in mydriasis (with dilated pupil). The check-up lasts approximately 30-40 minutes and the patient can immediately find out whether they are a good candidate for laser eye surgery. The laser eye surgery method is determined by your ophthalmologist after the check-up is completed. It is of utmost importance that any patient have realistic expectations. The purpose of refractive surgical procedure is to achieve ideal visual acuity, meaning 1,0. With a small number of patients it is possible that such acuity is not achieved and in such cases the actually achieved visual acuity is sufficient for normal everyday life without eyeglasses or contact lenses. The RGP lens carriers need to take the lenses off 2-3 weeks prior to the initial check-up. Soft lens carriers need to take their lenses off at least one week prior to the check-up. ___________________________________________________________________
Is laser eye correction safe? Every surgical procedure carries in itself certain minimal risks. More serious complications following LASIK and PRK are extremely rare. Numerous clinical studies showed less than 1% complications following LASIK. As a rule, such conditions are temporary. Most prominent are eye dryness, glare and light haloes. As a rule, such inconveniences vanish after several weeks or months. There is no recorded case of eyesight loss due to LASIK surgery. ___________________________________________________________________ Is the surgery painful and how long does it last? The procedure is entirely painless and is carried out in local anesthesia. Anesthetic drops are used to numb the eye. The procedure for both eyes lasts approximately 30 minutes. ___________________________________________________________________ Is sick-leave necessary following LASIK? Following LASIK procedure, patients may return to their everyday activities already after a day or two. The recovery following PRK and LASEK is somewhat longer. ___________________________________________________________________ Result durability after the procedure? Except with high prescriptions, the achieved results are in principle permanent. With the appearance of old-age farsightedness (40 years of age and beyond) the need to wear reading glasses will come into existence. People of 40 and beyond may decide upon monovision which entirely or partially removes the need to wear glasses for nearsightedness. ___________________________________________________________________
